Real Client Case Study: The Root Cause of Panic Attacks & Chronic Fatigue Nobody Is Talking About

The Root Cause of Panic Attacks, Chronic Fatigue & POTS Symptoms Nobody Is Talking About

By Ashley Drummonds, Integrative Health Specialist

If you've been bouncing from doctor to doctor — cardiologist, psychiatrist, neurologist — collecting diagnoses like panic disorder, chronic fatigue syndrome, or POTS, and still feeling no better, I want you to know something: it is not in your head, and you are not out of options.

I see this pattern all the time in my practice. Brilliant, motivated people who have been prescribed anti-anxiety medications, salt tablets, antidepressants, and a long list of symptom-management tools — but nobody has stopped to ask why the symptoms are there in the first place.

Today I want to share a real client story that I think will resonate deeply if you're struggling with unexplained anxiety, fatigue, dizziness, or sleep disturbances. Because what happened with her changed her life in just three months — and it started with a few simple questions most doctors never ask.

A Story You Might Recognize: Panic Attacks, Fainting Spells & No Real Answers

I had a client — a woman in her 30s — who came to me after years of trying to figure out what was wrong with her. Her symptom list was long and confusing:

  • Recurring anxiety and panic attacks, eventually diagnosed as panic disorder
  • Chronic fatigue so severe she could barely walk for long periods without needing to sit down
  • Symptoms that mimicked POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) — fainting or near-fainting spells when moving from sitting or lying down to standing
  • Persistent sleep disturbances
  • Overstimulation in public spaces like grocery stores, which would trigger panic attacks

She had seen a cardiologist — heart looked totally fine. She'd seen a psychiatrist and therapist who prescribed anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications. Another doctor offered salt tablets to help manage the blood pressure dysregulation.

Everyone was treating individual symptoms. Nobody was looking at the whole picture.

The Questions That Actually Matter: Starting With the Foundations of Health

When she came to me, the first thing I did was ask her questions that seem simple — but are surprisingly rare in conventional medicine:

1. What Are You Eating Every Day?

I know it sounds basic, but most doctors never ask this. Food is the foundation. What you put into your body every single day either supports your healing or quietly undermines it. We always start here.

2. What Is Going On With Your Gut?

The gut is often the missing piece in cases like hers. We looked at the possibility of:

  • Bacterial infections
  • Candida (yeast overgrowth)
  • SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth)
  • Leaky gut / gut inflammation
  • Food sensitivities

3. What Do Your Hormones Look Like?

I ran a comprehensive hormone panel — and I prefer saliva hormone testing over blood testing because saliva shows us what's happening at the cellular level, not just the baseline. We looked at:

  • Her cortisol rhythm throughout the day
  • Sex hormones and DHEA
  • A full thyroid panel
  • Fasting insulin
  • Key micronutrient levels

These are the foundational markers that paint the real picture of what is happening in your body.

What the Testing Revealed: The Real Root Causes

When her results came back, everything clicked into place. She had three major underlying issues that had been completely missed:

1. Completely Flat-Lined Cortisol (Adrenal Burnout)

Her cortisol levels were essentially non-existent throughout the day. The adrenal system is deeply connected to the autonomic nervous system — which controls your heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and your body's ability to regulate itself. When your adrenals are burned out, your entire system becomes dysregulated. This explained the fainting spells, the fatigue, the blood pressure issues, and a big part of the panic attacks.

2. Severe Candida Overgrowth driven by Mold Toxicity

Candida is a yeast that lives naturally in the gut, but when it overgrows, it becomes a chronic infection your body has to fight 24/7. This puts enormous, relentless stress on your adrenal glands and immune system — draining your energy, disrupting your hormones, and contributing to neurological symptoms like brain fog, anxiety, and nervous system dysregulation. Her recurring yeast infections and candida problem was driven by severe mold toxicity from a new house she had just moved into.

3. Multiple Micronutrient Deficiencies

Her body was running on empty nutritionally. Micronutrient deficiencies are one of the most overlooked drivers of anxiety, fatigue, and nervous system dysfunction. Without the right building blocks, your body simply cannot regulate itself properly.

"It was never panic disorder to begin with. What it was, was all of these underlying issues."

The Integrative Healing Protocol That Changed Everything

Once we identified the root causes, we built a whole-body protocol to address each one not just the symptoms on the surface.

Step 1: Heal the Gut

We addressed her food sensitivities, cleared the candida overgrowth, and worked on healing leaky gut. This involved targeted nutritional changes and gut-healing support.

Step 2: Address Mold Toxicity with a Personalized Mold Healing Protocol

This is one of the most under-recognized drivers of chronic mystery symptoms and it was a significant piece of her healing puzzle. Mold toxicity occurs when the body is exposed to mold spores (often in the home, workplace, or environment) and is unable to properly detoxify mycotoxins the toxic compounds mold produces. Not everyone reacts to mold the same way, which is why it so often goes undetected for years.

Mold toxicity can look like almost anything: crushing fatigue, anxiety, brain fog, sleep problems, hormonal disruption, nervous system dysregulation, and even symptoms that mimic POTS or panic disorder. Because standard lab work rarely screens for it, people are frequently told everything looks "normal" while they continue to feel terrible.

For this client, we built a personalized mold healing protocol that included:

  • Identifying and reducing ongoing mold exposure
  • Supporting the body's natural detox pathways (liver, lymph, and drainage)
  • Binding and removing mycotoxins from the body safely
  • Rebuilding the immune system and gut lining that mold exposure damages over time
  • Replenishing nutrients that mold toxicity depletes, particularly antioxidants and minerals critical to nervous system function

Mold healing is not a one-size-fits-all process it has to be personalized based on your specific toxic burden, detox capacity, and overall health picture. Trying to detox too aggressively without proper support can actually make symptoms worse. This is why having a guided protocol matters so much.

Step 3: Restore the Adrenals & Balance Cortisol

We worked specifically on restoring her cortisol rhythm and supporting adrenal recovery. When the adrenals heal, the autonomic nervous system begins to regulate itself again and many of the "panic disorder" symptoms begin to fade naturally.

Step 4: Replenish Micronutrient Deficiencies

We systematically replenished the nutrients her body had been missing the building blocks needed for her nervous system, hormones, and energy production to function properly. A huge factor that is helpful for a lot of individuals with POTS symptoms is sodium. Low sodium levels are directly linked to a lot of the symptoms related to POTS. However, on a deeper level when we look at electrolytes and the body struggling with electrolyte imbalances we have to look at the system connected to and responsible for electrolyte balance which are the adrenals and the autonomic nervous system. In this client's case, she had extreme adrenal burn out and was flat lined with her cortisol. On top of that, she was dealing with mold toxicity and the specific strains she was dealing with directly affect the kidneys and Aldosterone. Aldosterone is a steroid hormone produced in the adrenal glands that regulates blood pressure, fluid balance, and electrolyte levels (sodium and potassium). One of the things that helped her tremendously (while we focused on healing the underlying issues), was incorporating an electrolyte supplement with high sodium to help with her blood pressure.

Step 5: Strength Training for Nervous System Regulation

This one surprises a lot of people, but strength training is one of the most powerful tools for healing autonomic nervous system dysfunction. It helps regulate the nervous system, improves circulation, supports hormone balance, and rebuilds physical resilience. We got her on a consistent, progressive strength training program.

Step 6: Mindfulness & Nervous System Support

Alongside the physical healing, we incorporated mindfulness practices to help her nervous system learn to feel safe again; an important piece of long-term recovery.

The Results After 3 Months: A Completely Different Life

After about three months of working together on this integrated protocol, here is what changed for her:

  • No more panic attacks — completely gone
  • Going to grocery stores alone with no problem (previously a major trigger)
  • Working out 3–4 times a week with ease
  • Sleeping soundly through the night
  • Lost excess weight and belly fat that had been stubborn for years
  • Energy levels restored — no more chronic fatigue
  • Her family noticed the change — she was herself again

None of this happened by treating panic disorder with more medication. It happened by finally getting to the real root causes — and giving her body what it needed to heal.

What This Means for You

If you are currently experiencing any of the following, this story is for you:

  • Anxiety, panic attacks, or a panic disorder diagnosis that doesn't respond to treatment
  • Chronic fatigue or low energy that no one can explain
  • POTS-like symptoms — dizziness, fainting, or blood pressure issues when standing
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Overstimulation in public spaces or crowds
  • Vertigo or dizzy spells
  • A sense that something deeper is wrong, but every test comes back "normal"

You do not have to keep bouncing from specialist to specialist receiving only symptom relief. There is a deeper conversation to be had about what is actually happening in your body — your gut health, your hormone rhythms, your nutrient levels, your adrenal function.

When those underlying root causes are addressed, the body has an extraordinary ability to heal.
