Best Mold Detox: Why I Became a Mold Toxicity Specialist After Doctors Couldn’t Help Me

Best Mold Detox: My Mold Toxicity Journey

Best Mold Detox: My Story, the 5 Phases That Work, and Why Most Doctors Miss Mold Toxicity

If you’re searching for the best mold detox, chances are you’ve already been through the wringer. You’ve had symptoms nobody can explain, lab work that “looks normal,” and appointments where you walked out feeling dismissed.

I know exactly how that feels, because I lived it.

My Story: When My Body Stopped Making Sense

I’ve worked in health and wellness for over 20 years. I’m Board Certified in Holistic Health and Integrative Nutrition, and I thought I knew my body well. Then mold toxicity took me down. I have always been active and an athlete my whole life. I had a former personal training business, a former national natural food brand business, and have spent most my career as a health and wellness "expert". One night, I laid down to go to sleep only to be woke up a couple hours later with a racing heart and adrenaline running through my body in a full blown panic attack except I wasn't doing anything other than sleeping. A few days later, I was in a grocery store just browsing one of the aisles and the same thing happened except this time the panic attack was accompanies with vertigo.

I kept chalking it up to maybe a viral or bacterial infection and would let it just pass except things kept getting worse. I started having heart palpitations, extreme fatigue to the point I felt like I was going to pass out. I started developing food sensitivities and histamine reactions to everything I ate. I tried to just push through like I usually do, but the more I pushed, the worse I felt. And the more doctors I saw, the more alone I felt. I went to allergist, immunologist, functional medicine doctors, naturopathic doctors, hormone specialists, the ER (several times because I was convinced I was dying and having a heart attack) and every single time they all looked at me puzzled and said "everything looks normal....maybe you're just stressed and you don't realize it" which led to me feeling crazy and like I was losing my health and myself.

I want to continue sharing this part of my story in my own words, so please watch my video below:

Mold Detox Symptoms That Get Dismissed (or Misdiagnosed)

One reason mold illness goes unrecognized is that mold detox symptoms and mold exposure symptoms are all over the map. They hit the brain, the gut, the heart, the skin, and the hormones, and nearly every one of them can be written off as something else. These are the ones I see most often, and the ones people are most often told are “just stress.”

Brain fog, anxiety, and panic attacks. Many people are handed an anxiety diagnosis and a prescription, when the real question should be what is driving the nervous system into overdrive in the first place. Mold exposure is one possible trigger worth investigating.

Trouble sleeping. Waking at 2 or 3 a.m. with a racing mind, or feeling wired and exhausted at the same time, is incredibly common in people dealing with mold.

Constant thirst and dry mouth. You drink water all day and still feel parched. It’s easy to brush off, but it can point to something deeper going on with fluid balance and how mold (especially Ochratoxin A effects the kidneys and renal tubes).

Frequent urination and muscle twitching or spasms. Fluid and mineral balance can get thrown off, and people end up in the bathroom constantly while dealing with twitches, cramps, or spasms that no one can explain.

Unexplained heart issues. Blood pressure swings, palpitations, and even clotting concerns show up in many mold stories. If you’re experiencing anything like this, please get it evaluated by a physician right away. It’s worth ruling out serious causes first, and it’s worth bringing up mold exposure with a provider who will listen.

Vertigo and dizzy spells. The room spins, you get lightheaded standing up, and no one finds a cause.

Low energy. Not “I’m tired,” but “I can’t function” exhaustion that doesn’t improve with rest.

Unexplained weight loss or weight gain. Your diet and exercise haven’t changed, but your body is doing something different.

Thinning hair. Often attributed to stress or aging, but it can be a sign your body is under a heavier toxic load than it can handle.

Sudden food sensitivities and intolerances. Foods you ate for years suddenly make you react. For many of my sensitive clients, this is the first big clue.

Unexplained autoimmune symptoms. Joint pain, rashes, inflammation, and flares with no clear trigger and no real health history of any previous issues.

Many of these symptoms have other causes, which is exactly why proper evaluation matters. But when a long list of seemingly unrelated symptoms keeps getting treated one at a time, it’s worth asking whether there’s a common root. And it’s worth knowing that some people feel worse temporarily when they start detoxing the wrong way, which is a big reason a gentle, well-paced approach matters, especially for sensitive individuals.

I Searched for the Top Mold Doctors in the US. Here’s What I Found.

When I realized mold might be at the root of what I was dealing with, I did what you’re probably doing right now. I searched for the top mold doctors in the US. I searched for the top mold toxicity doctors. I typed “mold toxicity doctor near me” into Google more times than I can count.

What I found was frustrating:

  • Most conventional doctors have little or no training in mold-related illness.
  • The few somewhat knowledgeable practitioners often would just prescribe a generic "cleanse" or detox herbs for 30 days that didn't do anything.
  • Most doctors wanted to just write me a short anti fungal prescription like Itraconazole for a quick fix which I knew (and now stress to my clients you never want to start with antifungals as step one) it will only make things worse
  • Many people are told it’s “stress,” “anxiety,” “perimenopause,” or “just aging.”
  • Symptoms were treated one at a time, with a different specialist for each one and no one connecting the dots.

This isn’t about blaming doctors. Most were never taught how to recognize or treat mold toxicity. But the gap is real, and the people who fall into it are left to figure things out alone.

Why I Became a Mold Toxicity Specialist

I got tired of waiting for someone else to have the answers, so I became the person who did.

I went deep into the research, applied my background in integrative nutrition, and worked through my own healing step by step. Since then I’ve helped dozens of people through their own mold detox journeys, especially highly sensitive individuals who react to everything and have been told nothing can help.

To be clear, I am not a doctor, and I don’t diagnose or treat medical conditions. I’m a mold toxicity specialist, integrative health practitioner (Board Certified through AADP), an Integrative Nutrition specialist and someone who has been through this myself. If you need medical care or a diagnosis, work with a qualified physician. What I do is help fix the dysfunction in the body, open up your detox pathways, stabilize your nervous system, gut and immune system, and help you safely and efficiently detox and heal from mold without harsh treatments.

Don’t Guess What You’re Dealing With. Test.

Here’s the biggest mistake I see people make: they start taking binders, supplements, and “mold protocols” they found online without ever knowing what they’re actually dealing with.

Mold isn’t one thing. There are many different mycotoxins, and they don’t all behave the same way. Guessing means wasted money, wasted time, and sometimes feeling worse.

That’s why I don’t guess. I test.

The test I use with my clients is the Urine Mycotoxin Test. It shows which mycotoxins your body is excreting, so we’re working from data instead of assumptions. Knowing exactly which mycotoxin strains you’re dealing with lets us build a plan that fits you, instead of a generic protocol that may or may not apply.

Want to find out what’s going on in your body? Book a consultation with me and I’ll walk you through the test and how to get access to it.

What Does the Best Mold Detox Actually Look Like? My 5-Phase Approach

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but the best mold detox approaches follow a smart order. Skip ahead, and you can end up feeling worse. This is the sequence I use with clients, and it’s the foundation of my work.

Phase 1: Prep and Stabilize the Gut, Nervous, and Immune Systems

Before you try to pull anything out of your body, your body has to be steady enough to handle it. This phase calms the nervous system, supports the gut, and settles immune reactivity so detoxing doesn’t backfire. For sensitive people especially, this is the phase that makes everything else possible.

Phase 2: Open Detox Pathways

Your liver, kidneys, bowels, lymph, and skin are your body’s exit routes. If they’re sluggish or blocked, toxins have nowhere to go, and that’s when people feel flu-like, foggy, or overwhelmed. Opening these pathways first means that what your body releases can actually leave.

Phase 3: Bind and Eliminate

Once the pathways are open and your body is stable, we focus on binding and removing mycotoxins so they don’t get reabsorbed. This is where the right strategy, and the right timing, makes a huge difference. Done too early or too aggressively, it can cause the reactions people dread.

Phase 4: Fight Off Any Chronic Infections

Mold exposure often travels with other burdens, such as lingering infections that keep the immune system distracted and the body stuck. This phase is about supporting your body’s ability to address them, ideally alongside a physician who can evaluate and treat any infections that need medical care.

Phase 5: Rebuild and Restore

Detox isn’t the finish line. This phase is about rebuilding your energy, nutrition, gut, and resilience so your body can thrive, not just recover. This is how you move from surviving to feeling like yourself again, and how you stay there.

I outline exactly how to do all five phases, step by step, in my book, The Mold Detox Blueprint. If you’d rather start on your own with a clear plan in hand, it’s the place to begin. Get The Mold Detox Blueprint here.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mold Detox

What is the best mold detox?

The best mold detox is one built around your body, not a generic protocol. It starts with removing the mold exposure, stabilizing your gut, nervous system, and immune system, opening your detox pathways, and only then binding and eliminating mycotoxins. Testing to see which mycotoxins you’re dealing with makes the plan far more targeted.

What are the most common mold detox symptoms?

Common symptoms include brain fog, anxiety, trouble sleeping, fatigue, dizziness, constant thirst, frequent urination, muscle twitching, thinning hair, sudden food sensitivities, and unexplained autoimmune flares. Many of these overlap with other conditions, so it’s important to be properly evaluated, especially for anything involving your heart.

How do I know if I have mold toxicity?

You can’t tell from symptoms alone, because they overlap with so many other conditions. That’s why I recommend testing instead of guessing. I use the Urine Mycotoxin Test with my clients to see which mycotoxins the body is excreting. A physician can also help rule out other causes of your symptoms.

Are you a mold toxicity doctor?

No. I’m not a doctor, and I don’t diagnose or treat medical conditions. I’m a Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner and Integrative Nutrition Specialist, and a mold toxicity specialist who has been through mold illness myself. I work with clients on nutrition, lifestyle, environment, and detox support, and I encourage everyone to work with a qualified physician for medical care.

Can I work with a mold toxicity specialist if there isn’t one near me?

Yes. My practice is fully virtual, so you can work with me from anywhere. That’s a big deal for people who’ve been told there’s no mold-literate provider within driving distance, or who are too sick to travel.

How long does a mold detox take?

It varies a lot from person to person. It depends on how long you were exposed, which mycotoxins are involved, how sensitive your body is, and whether you’re still in a moldy environment. That’s one reason I move through the phases in order and at a pace your body can handle, instead of promising a quick fix.

Can I detox if I’m still living in a moldy home?

It’s very difficult. If you’re still being exposed, your body is taking in more than it can clear. Dealing with the source of the mold is a critical part of any real mold detox plan.
